You have the rite to remain silent, any thing you say will be held against you in the court of law.. or at least here on this site.
as soon as possible. this goes for any martial art.
I think that basic boxing can be taught as early as age 4, but I would not start modified wing chun until the kid turns 13 or 14. The mechanics of wing chun go so much against “natural” movements that maturity is necessary.
Bruce lee once said
I have not invented a “new style,” composite, modified or otherwise that is set within distinct form as apart from “this” method or “that” method. On the contrary, I hope to free my followers from clinging to styles, patterns, or molds. Remember that Jeet Kune Do is merely a name used, a mirror in which to see “ourselves”. . . Jeet Kune Do is not an organized institution that one can be a member of. Either you understand or you don’t, and that is that. There is no mystery about my style. My movements are simple, direct and non-classical. The extraordinary part of it lies in its simplicity. Every movement in Jeet Kune-Do is being so of itself. There is nothing artificial about it. I always believe that the easy way is the right way. Jeet Kune-Do is simply the direct expression of one’s feelings with the minimum of movements and energy. The closer to the true way of Kung Fu, the less wastage of expression there is. Finally, a Jeet Kune Do man who says Jeet Kune Do is exclusively Jeet Kune Do is simply not with it. He is still hung up on his self-closing resistance, in this case anchored down to reactionary pattern, and naturally is still bound by another modified pattern and can move within its limits. He has not digested the simple fact that truth exists outside all molds; pattern and awareness is never exclusive. Again let me remind you Jeet Kune Do is just a name used, a boat to get one across, and once across it is to be discarded and not to be carried on one’s back.
In other words Jeet Kune Do is not a martial art its more learning lots of different styles and then fusing them and bringing them together.
Whatever age where you or the kid can understand and follow basic instructions.
hello,
you begin jeet kune do from birth. we all do. jkd is a concept. it is all about learning to use the best tool for the job, adapting fluidly to dynamic situations.
most methods of training combatives go against this. they are presented, practiced and memorized as collections of techniques. “if you grab here and here, you can do these three throws…”
you can train in anything and “jeet kune do it”.
that said, any age that one could begin training in anything is a great time to begin training jkd.
it is easier to begin incorporating the concept early, as opposed to learning 5 or 6 systems for 20 years, THEN trying to adapt oneself to the new conceptual approach.
thanks
Never… Find another style… Try shotokan or judo…
What age should you start learning French? What age should you pick up rock-climbing? The answer to all those questions is the same: it really doesn’t matter. That’s not to say age wouldn’t be a factor, but there’s really no such thing as too old or too young. If you want to learn it, just sign up for classes and go for it.
