I really belive that JKD only suited the founder of this martial art Bruce Lee best, He created something that fitted him 100% ,as for the rest of using this system ,we only achieve a fraction of the entire philosofy. there can only be one Bruce

Wolfgath, you are trying to conform the stance in witch they are in as style, and form... If you haven't learned yet, its not about form, style, set of rules, limits, there aren no bounds on Jun Fan JKD, it's all about essence of being in the moment the fight is about to, and begin to determine the counter offensive.. You use they way of no way as a means to destroy your opponent.... Who is a psychic and can determine the path of a blow or attack?.... You must determine the way of the fight

The 'on-guard' stance is the ANCHOR of JFJKD. IT allows attacks & movement in any direction, makes you a smaller faster target, maintains your balance and protects your groin which is ALWAYS essential. Stances can be temporarily dissolved while executing but not discarded. JFJKD works for everbody if you learn IT correctly. JKD is NOT everything in martial arts rolled into one, thats 'JKD CONCEPTS' the JKD philosophy without any of the JKD fighting knowledge. Check the Bruce Lee Foundation.

fair enough but a good stance will give you an advantage and the proper stance will root you firmly, while allowing maximum mobility. jkd isn't about "do what you want in order to win" otherwise it'd say pick up a 2x4 and start smacking the guy around...or shoot him if u can :P

Dit kon beter, als jullie echt JKD begrepen zou je begrijpen dat wat jullie doen voorgeoefend is, en een echt gevecht is spontaan en kan niet voorgeoefend worden. Plus, nadat Chuck Norris tegen Bruce Lee zei "I like the abillity to kick anywhere at all" heeft Lee zijn JKD aangepast. Why the fuck zou ie anders bij zijn JKD demonstratie bij Ed parker die meervoudige agillity trap laten zien? En een trap in het gezicht kan makkelijk effectief zijn als je het effectief uitvoert.

It's a lot of fun. How long it takes depends on a number of variables, but you'll probably learn the basics kind of quickly. However, it's a very technique-rich system. To "master" it, like any martial art, takes a lifetime.

yep, it's very similar to wing chun except for the stances and the dynamics of some steps/kicks. it's a bit more mobile than wing chun which in my opinion is very good.

It varies from person to person. It's not hard for me. You use very little energy and it's a very soft art. The only time it will hurt any is if you get caught in a technique. Then, thanks to all of the stupids rules, you can tap out.

How about if MMA fighters had a fight with a JKD player. The MMA fighter would be able to strike high and low and shoot in high for a judo toss and low for a wrestlers takedown. I think JKD is too complicated. I was a competitive fighter for about 5 years in the AAU and I learned more from this than from any school. I learned that people move in strange ways when in actual combat. They don't leave their hands out when they punch or kick. Street fighters are most fun to fight, just stay calm.

The MMA fighter would be able to strike high and low and shoot in high for a judo toss and low for a wrestlers takedown. I think JKD is too complicated.
It's very hard.

The techniques themselves are not that bad--you just have to practice a lot. Problem is: there are lots of techniques. Just check out all the books in the bookstore. I took it for less than a year and there are tons of techniques I never heard of in the grappling magazines, books, online, etc.

Also there is a lot of body work. You need to be in good shape, strong, flexible, able to roll and fall well, excellent cardiovascular conditioning.

There is a reason why BJJ is known for few black belts compared to other martial arts. It takes a real long time to master. The techniques are designed for use against bigger opponents but that's really only if they don't know BJJ. In class( and competitions) your partners are also doing BJJ so skill level and body type/conditioning do matter. I got injured a few times---nothing serious--but that's something that will happen in any martial art, more so in grappling arts--look at wrestling--because people think you can go all out without serious injury compared to karate for instance. Striking arts either use gloves or pads or do not usually go all out--non contact or minimal contact.

If you try it and you like it, just keep practicing and you'll get better every week. Try to enjoy learning more than attempting mastery.

If your experience with JKD has lead you to believe that it is too complicated, then I would say you haven't had experience with real JKD. One of the most fundamental philosophies of JKD is the simplicity and efficiency - the removal of the silly complications that are so prevalent throughout most formal martial arts. This philosophy applies to not only the techniques used, but the nature of their application as well. You saying that JKD is too complicated strikes me as contradictory.

It's pretty easy. 90% of the techniques are designed for a smaller person to be able to use against a larger stronger person (with the proper skill). Once you achieve a dominant position you can control the pace.

It is a great demonstration from our netherlands neighbours, gratiulation! I think that JKD is one of the best systems to fight, better than to learn only wing chun because by JKD you learn much more from others martial arts styles.

BJJ requires commitment, and a postive attitude. You cant go in dwelling on how hard it is, cause thatll just make it harder. Once you understand the principle of leverage, get good conditioning and build determination it wont be so hard. Just focus, do your best and youll get theh ang of it before you know it

My son has been training in this awesome style for the last six months. He loves it.
How long it takes to master is all dependent on you. My son trains almost everyday saving Sunday as a rest day. When you first start out you will be taking more days off to recuperate. Don't practice if you are sore. You won't perform well. The more you do it, the more days you can practice.
So go slow in the beginning.

lol MMA Stemmed from JKD. Bruce even did wrestling and BJJ. You can see this in his last movie, game of death. Yes people do move in strange ways in combat, but if you know anything about JDK, you would know that you should deduce their style and use it to your advantage. And yes, people dont keep their arms outstretched, but every punch has a counter punch, which is a very heavy basis in JKD. Have you ever heard of Broken Rythym, of Counter time? you should really go read a book by Bruce Lee.

They are not shown in a bad light... The idea is too make Bruce Lee look good on camera and too make Chinese martial arts out to be the best in the world... Most Chinese action/martial arts films have always portrayed Japanese as bad guys, especially in the older Golden harvest and Shaw Brothers films of the 1970's and early 1980's. The reason being, is for the way the Japanese treated Chinese citizens as second class citizens or as "dogs", before and during World War 2. Of course, nowadays that attitude has changed, but some Chinese films still portray Japanese karate/judo somewhat in a negative light...

You can watch videos and learn the techniques and language but you can never actually. Learn how to do it unless you have a partner.
And having someone lay there while you try holds on them is not training. find a friend who wants to learn as well and train with them. But keep in mind a lot of the submisions Chokes and arm/leg locks are very dangerous and can be life threatening so I would advise against it.

13+ years of Judo training. Judo is actualy derived from Jujitsu so most of the submissions are the same

Unfortunately, books and videos aren't much better than refference material to those who already learned the fundamentals of the discipline in a formal class setting.

So I would say No.

plus, you need to train with others that're learning to do the techniques as well, s that you can learn to execute or apply them correctly and safely to an opponent, because if you happen to injure an opponent in the street, even if it's not a serious injury; you could be get b**ch slapped by a lawsuit from a punk lookin' to make a quick buck at your expense.

because I have heard of instances where this has happened, and the judge has ruled in the plaintiff's favor, even if the plaintiff was the aggressor in the situation.

So studying it in a class setting would be more beneficial.

You can learn about it on your own, but without training partners, you'll never get to actually practice. Imagine training as a boxer without sparring or getting in the ring... it'd be impossible.

If you can't find a BJJ school, look for Sambo or some other form of submission grappling. Judo is also a good alternative. The advantage of Judo is that the schools are less likely to be money grubbing (many are non-profit clubs), and they're usually easy to find. Good luck.

I learn alot from videos because I don't have as many days at the dojo as I would like. It is going to be hard though without some practice. Maybe you can work out with some friends and go over the moves.

Another option is to enroll in Judo if you can find that. It is not as focused on grappling but any good Judo school should have some grappling work.

Or maybe you can find a saturday class and just travel to it. One day a week you could still learn somethings.

gracie videos. But you really need to practice the moves live on someone else, that is the only way you will get good at them.

its gonna be very hard to teach yourself one u need a partner and two you need a professional to show you the proper technique behind it

also the eyes are blind to themself in other words you executing the moves will not be able to see what you are doing wrong as if you have a teacher

but i guess it would be better than not doing anything at all....as for books or videos i'd go with anything made by the gracies...obviously

good luck

I've been involved in MMA for about 20 years. You can't teach yourself Jujitsu. You can learn the basics from a book or video, but you will never be more than a beginner this way. You don't say where you live, but I bet if you keep looking, you'll find someone who teaches Brazilian Jujitsu. Check out the local Dojo's. If you can locate someone in your area who teaches any of the martial arts, (Karate, Judo) they will be able to steer you in the right direction. Good Luck and keep persevering.

You probably can, but i think it is better if you take some classes with trained bjj professionals. They'll give you a better understanding of the techniques. You'll also have people to spar with.

Depends on your own skill at ping pong. I usually just open up the face of my paddle, and don't try to apply any spin to it. Whenever I try to apply top spin, there's usually enough friction between the ball and paddle that it fires directly into the net (which is the idea when someone sends the ball to you with backspin). I have had success in trying to apply my own backspin, but I usually have enough success when I just get it back over the net. Whenever I can do that, I usually keep it low enough, and slow enough that the ball could bounce twice on his side the of net, which forces him to play up and usually can't apply much spin in the return. This allows me to be the one to start putting spin on the ball and gets me in better control of the game.

Hope this helps. If you really wanna mess up his world start applying side spin and watch the thing fly off the table.

A top spin heavy serve causes your return to go high, possibly off the table. Therefore, you need to counteract it with your own topspin spin, to keep it low.

You can spike a backspin serve without too much compensation for the backspin, but if its a low shot with backspin, I do exactly what you indicate (put my own backspin on it)

Agree with with the fact you don't need a whole gym to get a gym body, you need a change of habits.

Basically he was the 70's version of a professional fitness trainer. He acquired scientific knowledge on weightlifting, fitness. etc., He had an almost pure protein diet. he had alot of bananas. He was playing around with different mixes each week of extremely rich multi-nutrient milkshakes that he made out of his blender.
